Their impressions tell us something about the animals that leave them. But while actual footprints offer details on size, weight and speed, &lt;strong&gt;carbon footprints&lt;/strong&gt; measure how much carbon dioxide (CO&lt;span style=""&gt;2&lt;/span&gt;) we produce just by going about our daily lives. A drive to work, a flip of a &lt;a href="http://science.howstuffworks.com/light.htm"&gt;light&lt;/a&gt; switch and a flight out of town all rely on the combustion of fossil fuels like &lt;a href="http://science.howstuffworks.com/oil-refining.htm"&gt;oil&lt;/a&gt;, coal and gas. When fossil fuels burn, they emit greenhouse gases like CO&lt;span style=""&gt;2&lt;/span&gt; that contribute to &lt;a href="http://science.howstuffworks.com/global-warming.htm"&gt;global warming&lt;/a&gt;. Some start by calculating their carbon footprint to set a benchmark -- like a weigh-in before a &lt;a href="http://health.howstuffworks.com/diet.htm"&gt;diet&lt;/a&gt;. A carbon footprint is simply a figure -- usually a monthly or annual total of CO&lt;span style=""&gt;2&lt;/span&gt; output measured in tons. Web sites with &lt;strong&gt;carbon calculators&lt;/strong&gt; turn easy-to-supply information like annual mileage and monthly power usage into a measurable tonnage of carbon. Most people try to reduce their carbon footprint, but others aim to erase it completely. When people attempt &lt;strong&gt;carbon neutrality&lt;/strong&gt;, they cut their emissions as much as possible and offset the rest. &lt;strong&gt;Carbon offsets&lt;/strong&gt; let you pay to reduce the global greenhouse gas total instead of making radical reductions of your own. When you buy an offset, you fund projects that reduce emissions by restoring forests, updating power plants and factories or increasing the energy efficiency of buildings and transportation.&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p style="font-family: verdana;"&gt;Some companies have started to include footprints on their labeling. &lt;strong&gt;Carbon labels&lt;/strong&gt; appeal to consumers who understand and monitor their own carbon footprints and want to support products that do the same. The labels estimate the emissions created by producing, packaging, transporting and disposing of a product. The concept is similar to &lt;strong&gt;life cycle analyses&lt;/strong&gt;, the more intricate forerunner of carbon footprints. Life cycle analyses or assessments evaluate all of the potential environmental impacts that a product can have during its existence -- they're a more focused version of a carbon footprint.&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p style="font-family: verdana;"&gt;But life cycle analyses require teams of researchers who plot and compile data from every aspect of production, transportation and disposal. Personal carbon footprints are less precise but still give a quick, general idea of CO&lt;span style=""&gt;2&lt;/span&gt; output. Criar cidades compactas é apenas um aspecto a ter em conta, neste processo de sustentabilidade a abordar a partir de hoje. Ao longo de quatro jornadas da Quercus outros aspectos serão aventados.&lt;br /&gt;Isabel Fernandes&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Não mudar o modelo de desenvolvimento urbano que tem vindo a ser seguido não é uma opção. Porque “está esgotado” e, como tal, “difícil ou não, não temos outra alternativa”. Não é nova esta perspectiva e Adriana Floret é clara ao garantir que “não há outro caminho”, chamando “a atenção para a reabilitação dos centros históricos das cidades”, como “um exemplo de desenvolvimento sustentável”. Processo que a O PRIMEIRO DE JANEIRO, a arquitecta do Núcleo Regional do Porto da Quercus apelidou de “fundamental para a nova linha de construção que terá que surgir”. É que a par dos próprios meios de construção, e também eles terão que mudar, é urgente que se pense no reenquadramento das políticas nacional e local às novas exigências internacionais. Mas a reabilitação dos centros históricos das cidades, “que pode ser vista como uma gigantesca operação de reciclagem”, recriando “uma densidade urbana elevada” não é apenas o que Adriana Floret defende “é, justamente, o modelo urbano sugerido pela maior parte dos especialistas como o modelo mais eficiente do ponto de vista ecológico”. A explicação para que a reabilitação dos centros históricos seja “um instrumento precioso” é simples: “Esta criação de cidades compactas permitirá a redução das deslocações, a racionalização dos transportes, a libertação de solo para outros fins que não a urbanização”, bem como, a coesão social.&lt;br /&gt;A propósito das Jornadas Quercus de Arquitectura Sustentável, que arrancam hoje no auditório do Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis, Porto, o JANEIRO falou com esta responsável envolvida na organização da iniciativa que decorre até Maio: hoje, 29 de Março 2008, 19 de Abril 2008 e 24 de Maio. Adriana Floret é categórica: “A mudança não é só desejável. É obrigatória pelo futuro do Planeta”. Lembrando que “é nas cidades que se decide o futuro do ambiente global” suporta a ideia naquilo que chama “números esmagadores”: 50 por cento dos recursos materiais mundiais destinam-se à construção, 45 por cento da energia gerada destina-se ao aquecimento, iluminação e ventilação de edifícios. Não deixou de acrescentar cinco por cento que são gastos para os construir. Quarenta por cento da água utilizada no mundo serve para abastecer instalações sanitárias e outros usos nos edifícios, mas os números que tem para lançar não acabam aqui e lembra os 70 por cento dos produtos de madeira que se destinam à construção, apontando igualmente que 60 por cento da melhor terra cultivável foi ocupada pela construção.&lt;br /&gt;Se é inevitável que os responsáveis pelo sector da construção mudem o tipo de materiais que usam e as casas que constroem, não é menos verdade que os consumidores têm um papel fundamental. Porque, é convicção da arquitecta, quando estes começarem a exigir, o mercado terá que acompanhar. Mas “a inversão de procedimento é sempre difícil e as resistências acontecem inevitavelmente”, reconheceu Adriana Floret, que, em todo o caso, insistiu na consciencialização de cada um, que será mais importante do que as próprias leis. E aqui não deixou de fora (quase) ninguém: “É necessário que as pessoas tenham consciência sobre todos os factores que estão inerentes aos gastos energéticos. E quando digo pessoas, digo desde arquitectos a promotores e utilizadores”. Insistindo que a mudança exigível, mas que está a demorar a entrar no mercado de forma regular, deixando de aparecer como excepções, terá que surgir pela exigência do consumidor/comprador de qualidade e sustentabilidade da sua própria casa a partir “de um maior conhecimento”. Saber que Adriana Floret diz ainda faltar em relação “às técnicas de construção ambientalmente sustentável” atribuindo, igualmente, ao desconhecimento por parte do mercado “das vantagens económicas e sociais” deste tipo de construção. Lembra, contudo, que “o mercado imobiliário dos nossos dias já não é o mesmo de há dez ou 20 anos” e que a sensibilidade que as gerações mais recentes demonstram em relação às questões ambientais fará com que “a oferta tenha de se adequar a estas novas exigências”. Aponta igualmente o dedo à “formação de técnicos [a todos os níveis] e à oferta de produtos”. E apesar de acreditar que “estamos a atravessar um momento de transição”, crê que “estas anomalias serão corrigidas nem que seja pela exigência do mercado nacional e internacional”. Confiança que se estende à crítica em relação à generalidade da formação sobre a arquitectura e engenharia sustentáveis, que “continua a ser excepção quando devia ser a regra”, bem como “a oferta de produtos ecológicos”, que se mantém como uma secção especial dos catálogos dos fornecedores, “quando devia constituir a oferta principal”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Custos&lt;br /&gt;Também “a questão custos” foi referenciada pela arquitecta da Quercus-Norte, dizendo que “é cada vez mais decisiva”. E não se refere aos custos da arquitectura sustentável, que – diz – não serem muito diferentes dos da construção clássica, refere-se sim “aos custos inerentes de uma concepção e uso irracionais do edificado”. E aqui surge uma questão, colocada na inversão de papéis e é a própria a fazê-la: “Sabia que, segundo a Agência de Energia do Porto, 58 por cento da energia consumida neste concelho deve-se ao sector da habitação”. “E isto pesa, e de que maneira, no bolso das famílias”, reforça. Mas vai mais longe e junta o desperdício da água que “mais tarde ou mais cedo vamos também pagar bem caro”.&lt;br /&gt;E tamanha importância a água (um bem escasso) representa em diversos pontos da arquitectura que vai mesmo abrir as jornadas da Quercus, sob o nome «Conservação e uso racional da água», que irá abordar vários ângulos de uma só problemática. A este propósito, a arquitecta Adriana Floret lembrou que “40 por cento da água utilizada no mundo serve para abastecer instalações sanitárias e outros usos nos edifícios”. Daí a importância de se discutirem as várias formas de aproveitamento da água, nomeadamente a proveniente das chuvas. “Reaproveitá-la para lavagem de carros, rega de jardim, utilização em sanitas, máquinas de lavar roupa e louça”. E isto apenas para dar alguns exemplos onde o reaproveitando se alia à poupança. É que é igualmente essencial aprender a poupar. E neste campo, a selecção de aparelhos sanitários é outra forma de reduzir o consumo da água (com dispositivos de dupla descarga) e torneiras (com limitador de caudal). Nas jornadas serão ainda apresentados outros sistemas que servem este propósito, para além de esclarecerem sobre o reaproveitamento “depois deste ciclo de utilização doméstica”. Onde será explicado como é que “as águas dos esgotos podem ser reaproveitadas para a climatização e refrigeração dos edifícios”. Para quem pensar que isto se situa já para lá da realidade, Adriana Floret garante o contrário: “Isto não é ficção científica”. Diz mesmo que “existe, inclusive, quem esteja a estudar esta solução justamente para o Porto”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;---------------------------&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Um exemplo a notar&lt;br /&gt;Em Portugal existem exemplos de construção que merecem relevância e o conjunto residencial da Ponte da Pedra, Matosinhos, certificado pelo LiderA, e que deu origem ao primeiro Empreendimento Cooperativo de Construção Sustentável em Portugal mereceu o apontamento de Adriana Floret como “um caso interessante”. Recorde-se que O PRIMEIRO DE JANEIRO falou deste tema em Agosto passado e abordou igualmente aquele como exemplo de arquitectura sustentável. As a result, they're enjoying lower greenhouse gas emissions, a more secure energy supply, cheaper electricity and heating bills and a whole new attitude towards energy. &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt; While our government promotes the fallacy that we need &lt;a href="http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/climate/coal"&gt;coal&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/nuclear"&gt;nuclear&lt;/a&gt; to keep the lights on, innovative councils, businesses and individuals are taking the leap into a cleaner, greener future with decentralised energy. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; What is decentralised energy? Well, it's pretty much the opposite of our present, outrageously inefficient energy system, which was designed to meet the needs of a society that hadn't even heard of climate change. This centralised system is a shambles - in fact, it would be impossible to invent a less efficient way of generating energy.  &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; The typical power plant in the UK is only 38 per cent efficient. By the time we use electricity in our homes and offices, we've lost &lt;em&gt;nearly 80 per cent&lt;/em&gt; of the usable energy inside the fossil fuels we burn. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; This is mostly because we have two separate energy systems: one for electricity, and another to heat water and buildings. It's news to some, but &lt;a href="http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/solution"&gt;heat is a far bigger culprit than electricity&lt;/a&gt; when it comes to global warming.  &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; For electricity, we burn fossil fuels in a few large power plants, miles away from the homes and offices they supply. Two thirds of the energy available in fossil fuels is lost in the power plant as waste heat (a by-product of electricity generation) and during transmission. Another 13 per cent is lost through inefficient use in our buildings.  &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; For heat, we burn more fossil fuels (mostly natural gas) in boilers in our homes, offices and factories.  &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; It's a little bit like putting radiators on the outside of your house instead of inside it; we're burning one lot of fossil fuels for electricity, and another lot for heat, but waste heat is a by-product of electricity generation. Can't we just burn one lot of fuel to generate electricity, and capture the 'waste' heat at the same time?  &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; We can. Combined heat and power or CHP does exactly that. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;h2&gt;Combined heat and power &lt;/h2&gt; &lt;p&gt; &lt;a href="http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/moreabout_chp"&gt; CHP&lt;/a&gt; is the heart of an efficient, decentralised energy system like EfficienCity's. It's the most efficient way possible to burn fuel because so little energy is lost as waste heat. That's how CHP plants in Denmark can reach up to 95 per cent efficiency. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; Because the heat needs to be captured and piped around the local district, CHP plants are usually sited in the towns and cities where the electricity and heat will be used. This makes it more efficient for electricity generation as well as heat; very little energy is lost in transmission.  &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; If we combined the efficiencies of CHP with improved efficiencies in the home (proper insulation say, and minimum efficiency standards for appliances), we'd practically eliminate the profligate wastage of our current system.  &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; CHP is also brilliant in the transition from a fossil-fuelled energy system to one based on cleaner, greener fuels like biogas and biomass. CHP plants can run on a variety of fuels, which means that the fuel mix can include fossil fuels like natural gas but, as more cleaner fuels like &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biogas"&gt;biogas&lt;/a&gt; become more available, they can switch to those.  &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; Pretty much any organic matter can be used to produce biogas; farm waste is the most famous example (&lt;a href="http://anaerobic-digestion.blogspot.com/2007/12/bbcs-archers-programme-features.html"&gt;thanks to The Archers&lt;/a&gt;) but we could be reaping energy from all of our food that ends up as landfill. Biodegradable waste makes up about half of our total landfill, where it produces large amounts of &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methane"&gt;methane&lt;/a&gt;, another greenhouse gas. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;h2&gt;Local renewable energy sources&lt;/h2&gt; &lt;p&gt; But decentralised energy isn't all about CHP. There's &lt;a href="http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/moreabout_renewables"&gt;an abundance of energy&lt;/a&gt; out there in our natural world, ready to be harnessed. We could be harvesting energy from the &lt;a href="http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/climate/solutions/renewable-energy#win"&gt;wind&lt;/a&gt;, the &lt;a href="http://www.cat.org.uk/information/catinfo.tmpl?command=search&amp;amp;db=catinfo.db&amp;amp;eqSKUdatarq=20020503154933"&gt;sun's rays&lt;/a&gt;, the &lt;a href="http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/moreabout_renewables"&gt;ocean&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geothermal_heating"&gt;underground springs&lt;/a&gt; and even the &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geothermal_energy"&gt;earth itself&lt;/a&gt;. According to the government, just the wind, wave and tidal resources of our windswept island could meet 40 per cent of our energy needs by 2020. In the longer term, the sky's the limit. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;h2&gt;A flexible, scalable energy system&lt;/h2&gt; &lt;p&gt; Unlike our conventional power plants, decentralised energy is completely scalable and flexible. You can have a tiny CHP plant in a supermarket or an enormous industrial plant like &lt;a href="http://www.modernpowersystems.com/story.asp?sectioncode=88&amp;amp;storyCode=2027061"&gt;Immingham&lt;/a&gt;, which will soon provide as much electricity as &lt;a href="http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/nuclear/sizewell-b-the-facts"&gt;Sizewell B&lt;/a&gt;. You can have a single wind turbine like the one at Manchester City's stadium or a massive wind farm like the forthcoming London Array.  &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; This also means that decentralised energy systems can be installed much faster than huge power plants, and can be tailored to fit local needs. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;h2&gt;Energy security&lt;/h2&gt; &lt;p&gt; Whereas decentralised systems like EfficienCity's rely on local, diverse energy sources, our current system will soon rely mostly on imported fossil fuels. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; On top of that, using hundreds of small energy generators instead of a few major ones means there's a far lower risk of system failure; it's far less likely that several small plants will fail at the same time than that one big plant will. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; If a local decentralised network &lt;em&gt;did&lt;/em&gt; fail though, only one small area would be affected, and that area could import from neighbouring areas. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;h2&gt;No more energy price hikes&lt;/h2&gt; &lt;p&gt; Decentralised energy can also save consumers an enormous amount. &lt;a href="http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/moreabout_efficiency"&gt;Efficiency measures&lt;/a&gt; alone can save consumers a whopping £12 billion a year (the government's own figures) and they save more money than they cost to implement. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; But there are other savings to be made. Although energy from decentralised systems may be more expensive per kilowatt hour than energy from coal, it can actually work out cheaper for the consumer. Why? Because only 37 per cent of the average British electricity bill is for the electricity. The rest goes to propping up the grossly inefficient infrastructure. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; And of course, if the UK decoupled itself from the fossil fuel market, we'd be protecting ourselves from the massive price increases of gas, coal and oil, which will inevitably keep coming. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;h2&gt; Reclaim the power!&lt;/h2&gt; &lt;p&gt;Every major political party agrees that the future is decentralised. Every party, that is, except Labour, which wants to lock us into our archaic and criminally wasteful energy system with new coal and new nuclear power plants. With climate change already happening, that's precisely what we don't need. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; We’ve decided to reclaim the power from the dinosaurs in Whitehall, by asking local councils to take the leap into a genuinely sustainable energy future like the one portrayed in EfficienCity.  &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; Pioneering councils can transform the UK’s energy system. In Manchester, Eastleigh, Southampton, Woking and Birmingham, exciting schemes are already underway. Imagina, se puseres uma &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;maçã&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; numa janela, passado poucos dias a maçã apodrece e acaba por desaparecer, agora imagina que pões um saco de plástico, daqueles que vais às compras, não fiques à espera!! Demora anos!!&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="abcorpo"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;Pois é, e por demorar tanto tempo é que o assunto reciclagem é tão importante&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;, o ser humano produz vários tipos de material que não são facilmente degradados pelos agentes da Natureza e como somos muitos, há uma grande quantidade desses materiais espalhados por todo o lado. Alguns desses materiais são o plástico, o vidro, o metal, a esferovite. Esses materiais depois de usados são deitados fora e ficam acumulados e isso chama-se de lixo.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="abcorpo"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;Curiosidade:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt; Sabem quanto tempo esses lixos podem ficam na natureza?&lt;br /&gt;- O &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;papel&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; e o &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;papelão&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; podem levar de 3 a 6 meses para serem absorvidos.&lt;br /&gt;- Uma simples &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;pastilha elástica &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;pode levar 5 anos.&lt;br /&gt;- As &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;latas de refrigerante&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; levam uma vida: de 80 a 100 anos!&lt;br /&gt;- O &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;plástico&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; pode levar até 500 anos. Mas alguns, simplesmente, não se decompõem.&lt;br /&gt;- E agora o pior: o &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;vidro&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; fica um milhão de anos na natureza sem de decompor, dá para acreditar? Nós nascemos, morremos e o vidro ainda está lá, firme e forte!&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="abcorpo"&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;Então temos de arranjar uma solução para acabar com esse tipo de lixo. Podemos reaproveitá-lo!!!! É o que a reciclagem faz. Na reciclagem, o &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;lixo&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; é tratado como &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;matéria-prima &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;que será reaproveitada para fazer novos produtos. As vantagens: diminui a quantidade de lixo que vai para os lixões, os recursos naturais são poupados, reduz a poluição, além de gerar empregos.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="abcorpo"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;Os 3 R's são as palavras-chave para quem quer ser um defensor do meio ambiente! Reduzir, Reutilizar e Reciclar.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="abcorpo"&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;Para fazer a &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;reciclagem&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;, antes temos que saber o que é a recolha selectiva. &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;Recolha Selectiva&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; é a &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;separação dos materiais que podem ser reciclados ou não.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; Na recolha normal, o&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt; lixo doméstico&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; é colocado em sacos bem fechados e depois depositados nos contentores. Agora, na recolha selectiva a&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt; separação prévia dos resíduos recicláveis&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;, por &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;tipo de material&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;, nos contentores específicos (cada um possui uma cor) é a forma ideal de consciência ambiental. Tu podes reduzir bastante esse número com algumas atitudes simples no teu dia-a-dia:&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="abcorpo"&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;- Fala com a tua mãe para comprar &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;produtos com embalagens recicláveis&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;, que são reaproveitadas;&lt;br /&gt;-&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt; Aproveita os dois lados da folha de papel&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;: um texto que tu imprimiste e saiu errado pode ser um belo papel rascunho;&lt;br /&gt;- Sabes aquelas &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;roupas&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;brinquedos&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;livros&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;, e tantas outras coisas que tu não usas mais e ficam lá por casa? Do&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt; vidro reciclado&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; podemos ter &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;novos vidros&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; para serem usados como novos. &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;O importante da reciclagem é que se economiza mais água e energia.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; Por exemplo: &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;O papel reciclado requer cerca de 74% a menos de energia e 50% a menos de água do que o papel obtido de madeira virgem. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="abcorpo"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;Países campeões de reciclagem&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="abcorpo"&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;O &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;Japão reutiliza 50% do seu lixo sólido&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;. Neste país, são comuns diversos tipos de reciclagem. &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;Os Estados Unidos reciclam mais de um terço de seu lixo&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;. Isto é pouco se compararmos a meta de 25%, estipulada pela &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;União Europeia.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;Então para que Portugal comece a reciclar mais, é preciso uma consciencialização de que é preciso separar o lixo e fazer a recolha selectiva. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="abcorpo"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;A recolha selectiva &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="abcorpo"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;Existem espalhados pelas cidades, contentores, cada um representado por uma cor diferente. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;&lt;br /&gt;Os &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;papéis&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; e os &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;papelões&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; são representados pela &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;cor azul.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; Nos contentores, podes colocar &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;revistas&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;jornais&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;papel de escrita&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; e &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;embrulho&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;. &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:&amp;quot;;" &gt;Não podes colocar: papel sujo, celofane, papel alumínio, vegetal e fotografias. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;A reciclagem do papel é totalmente limpa, ou seja, não envolve nenhum processo químico, o que diminui a poluição do ar e dos rios. &lt;span class="PhotoLegenda"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;   &lt;p class="Text"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Três empresários abriram, em Chaves, a primeira empresa em Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro de transformação e utilização de óleos alimentares usados como combustível, disse hoje à Lusa um dos empreendedores do projecto.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div class="Text"&gt;&lt;p&gt;Rui Cardoso referiu que o objectivo da "Supermatéria" é converter os óleos usados nas frituras domésticas ou industriais (em hotéis ou restaurantes) em biodiesel, substituto do gasóleo, mais barato e amigo do ambiente.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;O empresário, que para a implementação deste projecto contou com o apoio de Hernâni Teixeira e Francisco Amaro, referiu que há cerca de um mês que estão a recolher os óleos usados pelos restaurantes e hotéis da região, através de uma empresa contratada para o efeito.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Está ainda a estudar, conjuntamente com a autarquia de Chaves, uma solução para a recolha dos óleos domésticos, podendo mesmo virem a ser colocados na cidade os denominados "oleões" para depósito destes produtos. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A "Supermatéria" produz, actualmente, uma média de uma tonelada de biodiesel por dia e o objectivo é que esse valor aumente para as duas toneladas diárias.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Para além dos benefícios a nível ambiental, o empresário diz que este combustível alternativo apresenta ainda vantagens económicas, já que um litro de biodiesel é mais barato do que o litro de gasóleo tradicional.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Rui Cardoso referiu ainda que estão já em negociações com empresas de transportes públicos e privados do Alto Tâmega para que para estas passem a utilizar o biodiesel.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;O empresário disse ainda que os resíduos que chegam, conjuntamente com os óleos alimentares, são recolhidos e aproveitados para produção de sebos e gorduras para farinhas.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Também as águas pluviais são aproveitadas para a limpeza de instalações e equipamentos.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Normalmente, o destino dos óleos usados é os aterros comunitários (através do lixo), as Estações de Tratamento de Águas Residuais (ETAR) e os rios ou o mar (quando são deitados fora através dos esgotos).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;O biodiesel permite reduzir, segundo o emprsário, em 75 por cento a emissão de dióxido de carbono, em 50 por cento a emissão de monóxido de carbono e em 100 por cento a emissão de enxofre.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
